What It Means To Be A “Millennial Mormon”

We’re Millennials, and we love sarcasm, Apple products, and the gospel of Jesus Christ.

We’ve been getting a lot of questions recently asking us what we mean when we talk about “Millennial Mormons”. So allow us to explain!

Millennial (noun): A person reaching young adulthood around the year 2000; a generation Y-er.

Millennials, first, are young people, born in the 80s/90s. We have a proficiency with technology, an understanding of social issues, and a desire to be individual. We grew up hearing that we could be anything we wanted. Millennial Mormons need more strength than other generations have needed to properly live the gospel of Jesus Christ – because the world is crazy and we’re being pulled by false ideas and conflicting opinions at every turn.

We started Millennial Mormons in order to be a voice for young church members. We saw a huge gap between official, gospelly-sound church sites like LDS.org and Mormon.org, and people’s personal blogs. We read a lot of posts by people our age that made their way around the internet from their own blogs, and we often felt uncomfortable about how “liberal” their views were when it came to actual church doctrine. We wanted to write posts that could be more candid and fun than official church sites, which obviously have to maintain a certain tone. But we didn’t want to just be another personal blog. We wanted to write things that would stick to doctrine and the teachings of the brethren as much as possible, while being an additional support to younger church members.

Let us be clear – when we say we want to be “a voice” for young church members, that doesn’t mean, “whatever voice anyone wants to have”. We want everything we do to ultimately help people come closer to Christ, and that means we unwaveringly support what President Monson and his ordained apostles teach. Naturally, we’re aware that general authorities, and even the president of the church, have their own opinions – we don’t assume that anything they ever say in their personal lives that we hear about is the word of God. But when they speak in the office of their callings, we listen.

This is not a place to discuss gay marriage, or whether or not women should be ordained – the prophet has already spoken on those issues. It’s a place to talk about things relating to the gospel, or sometimes just a place where you can laugh at a good old dose of Mormon humor. We welcome comments and discussion, but not the kind that tears people down, or attacks their faith. Those comments will probably be deleted if you make them.

Being a Millennial Mormon means loving Jesus Christ and putting him at the center of your life, while using the things God has given us, such as technology and easily-available church resources, to further His kingdom. We know, with as much certainty as we’ve ever felt about anything while on Earth, that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is Jesus Christ’s church restored to the Earth for these latter days before the second coming of the Savior. We know that God loves you. We know that He answers our prayers. We know that the teachings of His ordained servants will enrich and bless our lives greatly. We know that true happiness can be found only when one is striving to becoming more like our Heavenly Father.
